Oui Chef!
An immensely colourful and attractive character, Alexis Soyer was the most celebrated chef of his time – and far more.
After a successful early career in Paris, he fled the Second Revolution of 1830 for England where, after a spell working for the Royal household, he became chef de cuisine at the Reform Club. His signature dish of Lamb Cutlets Reform still features on the Club menu. Soyer later opened The Symposium –a gigantic restaurant alongside the Great Exhibition that failed spectacularly and nearly bankrupted him.
A great inventor and philanthropist, Soyer developed a soup kitchen and a series of recipes that provided relief to thousands during the Great Irish Famine. Later, he worked alongside Florence Nightingale in the Crimea, revolutionising the catering arrangements of the British Army and inventing the Soyer Stove, still in use by the Army during the Falklands campaign in the 1980’s.
Writer, composer, entrepreneur and lover, Soyer’s is a story that springs to life in the theatre.
‘Oui Chef!’ - written by the members of Act IV, with original music composed by Richard Cleghorn-Brown - combines original songs, comedy and magic to tell this amazing tale in a one-act show, lasting approximately 75 minutes.
The Group will be performing ‘Oui Chef!’ at the Buxton Festival Fringe from July 12-17, 2014 – including a special performance on the French National ‘Bastille’ Day July 14, which will be an exclusive evening of supper theatre in conjunction with The Old Hall Hotel.
